The University of Ngozi is a private institution of higher education located in northern Burundi. The University of Ngozi was set up as part of a community and private sectors whose aim was to develop local communities and higher education in Burundi. It was created April 17, 1999 and approved May 7, 1999.
At the time, the Burundian education system knew a significant increase in enrollment in secondary education and the situation could lead to a deadlock if nothing were done at higher education. The creation of the University of Ngozi then came to support and relieve the only public university that existed previously in Burundi.
The objective was to support the development of higher education in a country that then had a student for 1000 inhabitants, a figure well below the already low average African.
The University of Ngozi has five faculties and one institute:
- Faculty of Computer
- Faculty of Medicine
- Faculty of Agronomy
- Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Faculty of Law, Economics and Administrative
- Graduate Institute of Health Sciences (IUSS)
