Traditional crops

Since the 1994 genocide, Rwanda has made substantial strides towards recapturing lost economic ground.

Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s Economy and is largely dependent on the sector, with more than 90 per cent of the population engaged in this sector. Agricultural exports contribute more than 70 per cent of the total export earnings of the country, and coffee and tea alone contribute more than 70 per cent of these agricultural export earnings. Rwanda’s major export crops are coffee, tea, pyrethrum and cinchona. The government then developed strategies for diversification into commercial agriculture which led to the promotion of export of non-traditional crops.

Non-traditional cash crops present in Rwanda include:

  • Flowers of different categories e.g. Rose flowers and sunflowers
  • Fruits like avocados
  • Vegetables and artisans
  • Beans
  • Rice
  •  Wheat
  •  Maize
  • Cassava
  •  Bananas
  •  Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • Sorghum
  • Corn
  • Sugarcane

The government of Rwanda through Rwanda Agricultural Research Institute (ISAR) with mandate to conduct agricultural research has transformed subsistence to commercial agriculture through regionalization, intensification and specialization of Agricultural production.

The climate in Rwanda is favorable for the growing of various non-tradional crops and the country is therefore rich with fertile soils.
