Peat reserves in Burundi

Burundi possesses a peat potential estimated at 600 million tons.

The exploitable potential would be around 47 to 58 million tons.

Annual production is estimated 10 000 tons of dry peat at 30% humidity per year.

The management of the peat is the responsibility of the National Peat Office (ONATOUR).

The use of peat for electrical production is possible in Burundi through construction of thermal plant based on peat which can generate electricity of 20MW

Carbonization of peat allows use of peat in households in Burundi.

The use of peat was promoted by the Burundian government for quite a long time because it is beside fire wood the only natural energy resource in Burundian soil.
