Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RITA)
The Rwandan Information Technology Authority (RITA) has been set up as a statutory and autonomous national agency with the responsibility of national ICT implementation and coordination body under the direct supervision of the National Information Technology Commission (NITC). RITA also operates as the Secretariat of the NITC and has an administrative link and working relation with the Office of the President, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Communications, as its sponsoring Ministry.
Rwanda’s fibre optic and national backbone cable aims at providing more affordable and reliable telecom services in Rwanda. The telecom sector has been boosted by fibre optic network with the capacity to transmit large bandwidth. From Kigali City to Gatuna border through Uganda and Kenya up to the East African coast.
The 2,300 km cable which was completed in January 2011 covers Kigali City and provides connectivity to the country’s borders with Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania and DR Congo. The cable covers all the four provinces, links into the main police headquarters, universities and other remote government and administrative offices.
