Rwanda is a mountainous area which lies in the central part of Africa and is divided by the Rift Valley. There is an extensive mountain range extending from the north to south.They are major tourist attractions include; Subsistence farming, Hiking, Gorilla trekking, Mountain climbing.

Mount Bisoke

Location

Mount Bisoke is an extinct volcano in the Virunga Mountains of the Albertine Rift in the western branch of the East African Rift. It is located on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo but the summit is located in Rwanda and it stands at 3,711 meters. It is located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of the town of Goma and adjacent Lake Kivu. Mount Bisoke has the largest crater lake of the range.

Geography

The steep slopes of the mountain are densely covered with equatorial rainforest and alpine meadows and the summit does not gather snow, but is often shrouded in fog. Bisoke is one of the mountains considereda habitat for the endangered mountain gorilla.

Mount Gahinga

Location

Mount Gahinga is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. Gahinga lies between Muhabura and Sabyinyo mountains. The mountain is located on the boarder of Uganda and Rwanda. Mount Gahinga is more of gorillas and is filled with an extraordinary variety of plant life and busting with world class views.

Mount Huye

Mount-Huye

Location

Mount Huye is located near to the town of Butare in southern Rwanda. It is connected by a ridge to Nyungwe Forest to the west and is on the outer edges of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift.

Mount Huye gives its name to the surrounding Huye District, part of the Southern Province.

  • The mountain is an important source of mineral water, supplying both the Huye bottled water brand sold throughout Rwanda and the nearby Maraba fair trade coffee plant.

Mount Karisimbi

Location

Mount Karisimbi is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo and is 4,507 meters (14,787 ft).  Karisimbi is the 11th moutantain of Africa and it is in the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains which is a part of the East African Rift Valley.

Karisimbi is bordered by Mikeno to the north, Bisoke to the east and Nyiragongo to the west on the other side of the Rift Valley

Mount Muhabura

Location

Mount Muhabura аlsо known as Mount Muhavura is an extinct volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and Uganda. The mountain is 4,127 metres above sea level. Muhabura is the third highest of the eight major mountains of the Albertine Rift the western branch of the East African Rift.

Muhabura lies partly in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda and partly in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda.

Mount Nyamuragira

Location of Nyamuragira

Mount Nyamuragira is an active volcano mountain   located about 15 kilometres north of Goma Town in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain has frequently eruptions which are accompanied by persistent lava resulting in rapid emplacement of parasitic cones. Nyamuragira is Africa’s and one of the world’s most active volcanos and it erupts roughly every two years, producing large fluid lava flows.

The volcano has a steep sided summit caldera with an approximate diameter of 2 kilometres within the main summit. Nyamuragira volcano lies in the Virunga volcanic field which includes 8 volcanic mountains broadly trending in an East West direction to the north of Lake Kivu.

Mount Nyiragongo

Location

The mountain is located within 20 kilometres north of the town of Goma and Lake Kivu and just west of the border with Rwanda. Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano in the Virunga Mountains associated with the Albertine Rift. On the mountain there is a crater which is about two kilometres wide and usually contains a lava lake. The crater presently has two distinct cooled lava benches within the crater walls one at about 3,175 metres and a lower one at about 2,975 metres.

Some older craters on the mountain are noted for their plant life. Nyiragongo is known for its devastating eruptions.

Mount Sabyinyo

Location

The mountain is located in the borders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. It also lies within Virunga National Park in the Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. The summit of the mountain at 3,645 metres (11,959 ft). The mountain also is an extinct volcano in eastern Africa, in the Virunga Mountains.
