MILLET GROWING IN RWANDA

Millet is widely grown and is a stable food for Rwandan population. Millet is one of the oldest foods known to humans and possibly the first cereal grain used for domestic purposes. Today millet ranks sixth  as the most important grain in the world.

Uses of Millet in Rwanda

The millet has the following uses:

  • The crop is grown for both food
  • It is a raw material for brewing of local beer.
  • The flour is used as porridge for children and adults
  • The  flour can be used in the production of  biscuits, bread and  cakes
  • It is a source of cash for the households
  • The millet grass can be used for mulching and for making silage for cows.
  • It can be  stored hence it is a good commodity for fighting hunger
  • It can be mixed with other flours to make a good baby food.
  • It is also used a beverage in the Rwandan culture especially during wedding ceremonies.
  • It can easily be stored and is therefore a good food reserve for famine

 Conditions that favour growing of millet

  • Millet can grow in harsh environments where other crops cannot grow or yield poorly.
  • Millet can grow in areas of limited water resources.
  • Millet can grow without the application of fertilizers or other inputs.

Values of Millet

  • Millet is recommended by nutritionists.
  • Millet contains fat and cholesterol agents that reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers.
