Lake Cohoha

Lake Cohoha  is located between near Rutega in Burundi about 124 kilometers from Bujumbura Town about lies between 2°20′ and 2°35′ Southern latitude, and 29°58′ and 30°11′ of Eastern longitude at 1,351 m of altitude.

With a surface of 7,850 hectares, the lake is presented in the form of a lengthened corridor of 27 km long and 0.4 – 1.8 km width. On the right and on the left are ramifications both numerous and long (0.4 km width and up to 8 km long)

The average depth is 7 m and varies from 5 -7 m towards the North and 8 – 10 m in the Southern part. The bottom of the lake is sandy or gravely all along the littoral zone except at the bottom of bays where it is muddy. It is one of the most attractive areas of cross border lakes with Yaranda beach, agricultural banks and papyrus

Location

This is a shallow lake and has a shoreline of some 227 km with 167 km in Burundi and 60 km in Rwanda. It is on the border between Burundi and Rwanda. The mean depth is around 5.2 m with a maximum of 11 m. The lake areas have mean temperature of 21 degrees and annual rainfall of 1000mm.

The Lake has the potential fish annual yield estimated at about 200 tons per year. The total annual production of fish on the Rwandan part is estimated at about 40 tons per year.

Population Density around the Lake

The population around the lake area is estimated at about 30.000 people involved in the growing of food crops, coffee and also engage in fishing

Activities at the Lake Cohoha

The activities around the lake include the following:

  • Fishing of tilapia and catfish among other fish.
  • Growing of crops by peasants farmers

The fishermen who are also involved in farming number about 80. They use canoes for subsistence fishing and sale extra catch to generate some cash.
