Independence Monument in Bujumbura

Resting on a hill overlooking Bujumbura is Burundi’s Independence Monument inscribed with the National Motto: Unity, Work, Progress.  Rebecca Feeley/USHMM.  June, 2009.

The monument of Unity was inaugurated by the President of the republic, Major Pierre Buyoya on the 3rd anniversary day of the adoption of the Charter of Unity by Burundians. The construction of such a symbol was proposed by the national committee in charge of the analysis of the question of Unity in Burundi, created on the 28 september1988 after the tragedy of Ntega-Marangara events on the 15 August 1988.
