General Information of Burundi

Burundi is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa and is also known as the “heart of Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west and much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.

  • Burundi’s land area of 25,680 square kilometers is distributed as follows:
  • Forests cover land area of 1,720 square kilometers
  • Lakes cover an area of 2,600 square kilometers
  • Rivers, Floodplains and Swamps cover an area of 80 square kilometers
  • Irrigated land covers an area of 140 square kilometers
  • Agriculture land covers an area of 21,500 square kilometers

Mountains: Burundi has Hehe Mountain rising to the height of 2,670 meters

Longest River: River Nile
Largest Lake:  Tanganyika 660 kilometers long and has a depth of 4,710 feet
Biggest forest: Bururi forest reserve, Rusizi forest reserve, kigwena forest among others

Congo-Nile Ridge
National parks i.e. Kibira, Rusizi, Rubavu
